Study References

The table below shows the variety of research I have done. In order to get a better understanding of comics I have researched artists work as well as researching the history of comics to see the development over time. When researching I have tried to use a variety of different sources such as books, websites and videos so that I am able to get the best results when researching and not limiting the responses made by different artists.

Source: Book/Website/Video
Focus of the research
Ivan Brunetti Cartooning: Philosophy and Practice (Book)
The purpose of using this books was to get a better understanding of cartoons and comics. This book looks at different aspects of cartooning such as terminology used within cartooning, techniques and equipment.
Ghost World (Film)
Enid continues to attend art classes in order to gain the diploma. Even though she is capable of art the teacher dismisses her artwork as she struggles to find the concept of her drawings. The focus of the research is to get a better understanding of the meaning behind art.
James Kochalka The Cute Manifesto (Book)
This book contains several different essays based on comics and looks at different views, “So it’s not a matter of learning how to draw in sense that most people think of it.” Therefore the focus of this research was to understand the process of creating comics and understanding there isn’t a right and wrong in style.
Dan Berry 24 hour comics (Website)
The focus of the research was to get a better understanding of the process in making 24 hr comics. Dan outlines how he prepares himself for 24 hr comics and provides guidance within the essay.
Scott McCloud
Understanding Comics
(Book)
Scott McCloud Understanding Comics is an analysis of comics. Thus the focus of this research is to get a better understanding of comics and the elements used within them e.g. understanding what comics are, the frames and colour etc.
Reading Comics
(Book)
The book explores the history of comics and how they developed through the different stages such as the Golden Age. The book also contains in depth comparisons of different artists such as James Kochalka. This gave me a better understanding on the history of comics and how they have developed rather than relying on websites.
Whatcha Mean, What's a Zine?: The Art of Making Zines and Mini Comics  (Book)
This book explores the creation of zines and how these contribute to the comic industry. The book gives users a guide on how to produce their own zines by producing step by step instructions. As well as this it includes a range of different zine artists which allow the audience to view a selection of their work.
Artist views on being an indie artist (Website)

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2014/04/what-it-really-means-to-be-an-indie-comics-creator-box-brosn-andrew-aydin-miss-lasko-gross-and-charles-forsman-at-asbury-park-comic-con/
An interview with different artists, Box Brown,  Andrew Aydin, Miss Lasko Gross and Charles Forsman discussing what it's like to be an indie artist in the comic industry. This gives me an insight when comparing mainstream and independent comics.
John Porcellino,
Perfect Example (Book)
The book allowed me to explore the different styles which artists use, in this case John Porcellino uses simple lines to create comics rather than detailed drawings. This allows me to take different drawing styles into consideration and compare them when discussing the difference between independent and mainstream comics. As well as this this also gives me more options when creating my own comic.
